Another week, another volume of Sangokushi! Now, although I’ve said that this manga is very faithful to the original novel, there are still some things cut out so I’d like to take some time to mention some of the more important or humorous ones that didn’t find their way into Sangokushi. Spoilers ahead so make sure you’ve finished reading volume 8 first.
1) In chapter 42, the story briefly mentions how Dong Zhuo’s general took control of Chang’an from Lu Bu after Dong Zhuo’s death. When these remnants of Dong Zhuo’s army took over the capital, they killed Wang Yun to avenge the death of their lord.
2) In the original novel, Cao Song tries to escape with a concubine of his when he sees that Zhang Kai and his men are out to kill him. Unfortunately for Cao Song, his concubine’s obesity hindered his escape and was thus caught. Moral of the story is: Never escape with fat people (unless you use them as bait or something).
3) Sangokushi doesn’t go into too much detail about Cao Cao’s numerous talented and loyal men so I wanted to note some of the people he managed to recruit after suppressing the rebellion in chapter 42. They are: Xun Yu, Xun You, Guo Jia, Cheng Yu, Yu Jin, Mao Jie. I’m probably forgetting quite a few more but the point is that Cao Cao had A LOT of charisma and skilled retainers.
4) The original novel says that Cao Cao killed many innocent Xuzhou citizens and dug up their graves as he and his army marched on to kill Tao Qian. Cao Cao, definitely not a man you ever want to fuck with.
5) Lu Bu shows his stupidity and Cao Cao displays his sheer luck when Cao Cao’s army was lured into Puyang in the novel, corresponding to The Two Traps chapter. What happened was Cao Cao gets separated from Dian Wei and happens to run across Lu Bu. He tries to hide his face with his hand only to have Lu Bu come up to him who TAPS CAO CAO’S HELMET WITH HIS HALBERD and asks, “Where is Cao Cao?” To this, Cao Cao quickly replies, “Over there.” And thus Cao Cao manages to live another day.
There are a few more notable omissions like Ma Chao fighting rebels, or Taishi Ci making his appearance but their roles in the novel are still yet minor and I can understand why Yokoyama cut those parts from volume 8. Don’t worry, you’ll see them within due time.
