Anime

This is for that one anon (and perhaps some others) who wanted to see the kind of anime I like. I’m much too lazy to do actual reviews on them so I just wrote 1 or 2 lines about whatever came to mind. I know there are a few others that I’ve watched and liked that I’m forgetting but whatever.

Adult Empire Strikes Back
You don’t really need to know the crayon shin-chan series to watch this.

Akagi
Knowledge of mahjong not necessary. The Washizu arc is rather slow but overall, it’s a great show.

Astro Fighter Sunred
One of those rare comedy anime that’s actually funny. It might not be the laugh-out-loud-type of comedy, but I come out smiling every time I watch it. Vamp-san is mai husbando.

Baccano
A very fun ride. Most of the characters are rather flat but their quirks are still endearing and with the huge cast of characters and multiple plotlines, you’ll realize that character depth isn’t necessary for a good story. If you haven’t watched this yet, don’t judge it based on its first episode.

Big O

Blazing Transfer Student OVA
Fun hot-blooded action. I really should check out some of Shimamoto Kazuhiko’s manga one of these days…

Casshern Sins

Castle of Cagliostro

Cat Returns

Cat Soup
Japan is known for a lot of weird shit but this one takes the cake. Okay, okay, I’ve seen weirder stuff but they’re not as good. I will definitely check out the manga.

Cowboy Bebop

Darker than Black season 1

Dead Leaves
COMPLETELY INSANE (in a good way) action movie that doesn’t overstay its welcome. This is style over substance at its best. FUCK YES HIROYUKI IMAISHI.

Dennou Coil
One of the best shows I’ve seen in years. Oh how I wish to relive my childhood in the world of Dennou Coil. Then again, I’d probably piss my pants at hearing BOKU SATCHII.

Ebichu
Good old animal abuse combined with raunchy humour. Never gets old.

Eureka 7
There’re definitely pacing issues throughout and yes, the kids will get on your nerves (but that’s how kids are in real life). And though the ending was too sappy for my tastes, I still absolutely adored this show. It also has one of the best soundtracks I’ve heard in anime ever.

Excel Saga

FLCL
One of my all-time favourite shows and no, it is not random. Great music, great animation, fun characters and such a creative way to tell a coming-of-age story. I honestly can’t find a flaw with it.

Full Metal Panic Fumoffu
Although I dislike the FMP anime, I have to admit, Fumoffu was excellent.

Gankutsuou

Galaxy Express 999

Genius Party/Genius Party Beyond
A lot of hit or miss here but ultimately still worth watching. Genius Party Beyond’s Wanwa the Puppy is FUCKING FANTASTIC. Fuck you if you don’t like the artstyle.

Gunbuster/Diebuster
Make sure you watch Gunbuster before Diebuster even if you think robots doing push-ups is incredibly stupid.

Gurren Lagann
I dropped this show 3 times during the first arc but it’s now turned into one of my all-time favourite anime. I initially thought it would be just another anime about friendship/love/willpower/etc beats all. Not that it doesn’t have stuff of that sort, but there’s surprisingly more to it than what met my eye upon first glance.

Haibane Renmei

Hidamari Sketch
If you’re going to watch a show for purely its moe-factor alone, this would be a good candidate.

Ichigo Mashimaro
I don’t care if it’s cute or pedo, I need more.

Ippatsu Kikimusume
A really stupid show yet I’d be lying to myself if I said I didn’t enjoy it.

Kaiba
Ending is a bit unpolished but what can I say, it’s a nice sci-fi/romance show. Especially loved the artstyle for this, reminds me of Tezuka + Little Prince

Kaiji

Kemonozume
God, I LOVE Masaaki Yuasa.

Kemono no Souja Erin
Underrated gem of ’09. Most people will find this very slow and boring but I loved this show nonetheless. Lovely background art and a nice soundtrack.

Kino’s Journey

La Maison en Petits Cubes
A beautiful anime short. One of the few times in my life when I actually teared up to something in fiction.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes
What hasn’t been said about this masterpiece already? This is one anime you want to watch before you die. Second time I ever teared up at an anime(he waited for you, Mittermeyer ;_;). Very reminiscent of Romance of the Three Kingdoms for me.

Master Keaton

Michiko to Hatchin

Millenium Actress
I’d say it’s Satoshi’s Kon’s best film. A must-watch.

Mind Game
If this movie doesn’t make you feel like kicking down that door to run out to the real world and REALLY START LIVING YOUR LIFE, I don’t know what will.

Mononoke
I really wish more anime could be as visually appealing as Mononoke. I could watch this show for the art alone but I don’t need to since its atmosphere and story are excellent as well.

Mushishi
Fantastic show made only better by the haunting but captivating ambience it maintains throughout.

Nadia – The Secret of Blue Water
A great adventure anime, especially for kids. Island arc does not exist.

Natsume Yuujinchou

NieA 7

Noiseman

One Outs
Baseball can be…interesting? Who knew?

One Piece Movie 6
A must-watch if you’re a One Piece fan but even if you’re not, I’d still urge you to do so, more so if you’re a fan of Mamoru Hosoda.

Planetes
An anime truly worth buying. Some people prefer the manga, but I’d say the anime was much better. Either way, do yourself a favour and try both the anime and manga.

Porco Rosso

Princess Tutu
How can a magical shoujo show about ballet be so awesome? Also, I will never dance a Pas de deux ;_; sadfrog.jpg

Rose of Versailles
OSCAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!! Seriously, go watch this anime now if you haven’t watched it yet.

Samurai Champloo

Serial Experiments Lain

Spice and Wolf

Spirited Away

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
My favourite Mamoru Hosoda film so far. His movies have such beautiful backgrounds.

Tokyo Godfathers
A great Christmas movie.

Trapeze
This is a COMEDY (a pretty entertaining one at that), and not the lolDEEP show that some people think it is after their brains have become confused by all the psychedelic colours.

Twelve Kingdoms
The 3rd arc is good, but the other arcs can be a bit slow/boring.

Welcome to the NHK
Funny and ridiculous, but at times, quite touching. Another anime with a great soundtrack  (gotta love “Hitori Bocchi”) The pros of this show more than makes up for the occasional QUALITY.

Windy Tales
One of those rare slice-of-life shows that doesn’t need to rely on moe to make things interesting.

I was the anon who asked for the list – thanks, very interesting one! Now I won’t ask for the reasons why some shows made it on the list and some didn’t, I didn’t want this kind of discussion. Let me just comment some things, though.

    >Darker than Black S1
I did like this show as well, but what made it so remarkable for you in order to belong on this list? Are you very disappointed by S2?

    >Michiko to Hatchin
Seeing the miserable sales numbers for this makes me rage to no end. Fuck you, Japan, fuck you.

Put some of those anime on my list (Windy Tales, Noiseman), will make sure to check them out.

To be honest, I didn’t find DtB all that remarkable compared to some other shows that I listed here. But I still included it since it had some memorable moments near the end and an alright soundtrack. And yes, I was disappointed by S2.

    Nice taste.
I almost like all series you listed, besides Serial Experiments Lain and Spice and Wolf.

It would be quite interesting how you feel about Cromartie High School.

    No Mouryou no Hako, Hox?
